Drama

Drama is used within lessons to enable children to develop skills such as adopting roles, improvising, and performing, and helps children to explore characters, settings and ideas through role-play.

Drama and performance are central to the Highgate Primary Curriculum

Throughout their time at Highgate Primary, children develop strong oracy and excellent performance skills, with numerous opportunities to perform in front of an audience on the stage in our spectacular Victorian school hall.

The journey starts with the Nursery and Reception Harvest assembly, which is soon followed by a Nativity at Christmas and a class assembly in the summer term, typically a retelling of ‘The Little Red Hen’ or ‘The Gingerbread Man’, to a whole-school audience. Class assemblies take place every subsequent year, and are genuinely uplifting experiences for both the class and audience.

The whole school Christmas show, produced and directed by the school’s leader of music and performing arts, Hilla Moshenson, is always a highlight of the year – a joyful celebration with every child from Year 1 to Year 6, singing, dancing and acting in a performance that unites the school community. ‘Scrooge’, ‘The Jungle Book’, ‘Mary Poppins’ and ‘Alice in Wonderland’ are firm favourites.

The school’s commitment to performance and creativity is no better illustrated than through the school’s collaborations between our talented class teachers and composer, artist, theatre director and educator, Kate Stilitz. Under her guidance, each year the children experience a week packed full of creativity, engaging with stories through song, poetry, choreography, acting and music.

They also explore different art forms such as shadow puppetry, sculpture and animation, all leading up to a performance of an original piece ready to be performed to the school community – the results are simply stunning.
