Music is a universal language that embodies one of the highest forms of creativity.
Highgate Primary School’s high-quality music education engages and inspires children to develop a love of music and their talent as musicians, and so increase their self-confidence, creativity and sense of achievement.
As pupils progress through the school, they develop a critical engagement with music, allowing them to compose, and to listen with discrimination to the best in the musical canon.
At Highgate primary, all children have a weekly music lesson which is usually taught by our specialist music teacher, Hilla Moshenson. In Year 2 children are taught to play the recorder and in Year 4, all children are given the opportunity to learn a second instrument through the Whole Class Music Tuition Scheme. Many children have additional opportunities to learn an instrument within lessons taught by visiting music teachers through Haringey Music.
Beyond the formal music curriculum, music plays an important part in the life of the school. All children listen to music within the school day and sing regularly within music assemblies, class performances and whole school concerts. Many children have additional opportunities to sing communally within our school choirs and perform their instruments within our programme of music concerts.
