Our high-quality science education provides the foundations for understanding the world through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics.
At Highgate Primary School, we believe that children learn science best when:
- they investigate, through hands on experience, questions they create for themselves;
- teaching challenges preconceptions and encourages children to test what they know;
- lessons stimulate high quality conversations about what children have observed;
- learning is relevant to the children’s everyday lives;
- lessons proactively engage the children’s analytical thinking and teach them new skills;
- lessons are well planned and well resourced, but leave space for surprises.
Within our curriculum, all pupils are taught essential aspects of the knowledge, methods, processes and uses of science. Through building up a body of key foundational knowledge and concepts, pupils are encouraged to recognise the power of rational explanation and develop a sense of excitement and curiosity about natural phenomena. They are encouraged to understand how science can be used to explain what is occurring, predict how things will behave, and analyse causes.
